Paducah welcomed the plant in 1952. Operated by DOE for 41 years and by USEC since 1993, it has brought thousands of highly skilled jobs and more than $5 billion in economic benefits.
Certain past practices resulted in contaminants being released to the environment.
In 1988, when contamination was found outside the site boundary, steps were taken to protect the public—and the environmental cleanup mission began.
