Waste Burial Grounds -
More than 60 acres of previously used disposal areas containing material ranging from typical municipal landfill waste to items that are flammable, hazardous, or radioactive.
How much buried material is treated in place vs. being excavated will determine how much waste there will be for disposal.
Planning
Planning begins many years prior to actual cleanup work. This conceptual, or baseline, planning involves making preparations for cleanup actions before having detailed information or engineering evaluations and designs. This allows us to determine approximately how much money is needed, how best and when to spend the funds, what additional information is needed to make the best decision, how many workers we will need to hire, and how to schedule the work so that projects are completed in the most effective order.
Off-Site Groundwater Contamination - Once source areas have been removed or contained, DOE will evaluate the most effective way to clean up contamination in the groundwater. In most of the gold area on the map, the contaminant TCE is dissolved in the groundwater.
