Past & Current Work

Protecting Human Health

DOE has removed 30,000 tons of scrap metal, thus eliminating the site’s largest source of surface water contamination.

DOE has also extended city water to replace groundwater wells for more than 100 residences potentially affected by contamination and created a network of hundreds of monitoring wells and more than 10,000 sampling locations to support cleanup work and ensure additional contamination does not unknowingly spread beyond the plant.

Removing Potential Risks

Eliminating Stored Wastes

• Wastes stored at the site for up to 50 years will be gone in 2009
• Dozens of acres once used for waste storage are available for other uses
• Potential sources of contamination removed

Removing Unused Facilities

• Enhances safety for plant workers
• Eliminates potential source of contamination
• Reduces long-term maintenance costs
• 14 facilities removed to date
• 5 more to be demolished in 2009

Removing Contamination Sources

Waste Burial Grounds - Excavating or treating wastes that may present a risk to people or the environment.

Groundwater - Using electrical current to vaporize and extract contamination 100 feet below the surface.

Soils - Removing contaminated soil and rubble.
