On-Site
Evaluation Criteria
What determines if on-site disposal can be implemented?
Potential disposal facilities must meet the following criteria:
• Located on DOE-owned land
• Sufficient acreage availability (for waste facility and support facilities)
• Locations configured by major site/geographic features
• Roads
• Railroads
• Operating facilities
• Major power lines
• Creeks
• Floodplains
• Wetlands
• Endangered species habitats
• Seismic compatibility

There are five on site disposal locations to evaluate. Not all sites are suitable for an on-site facility.

When considering the factors associated with effects of potential seismic activities in the region, several questions are often asked when considering a waste disposal facility. DOE provided a grant to the Kentucky Research Consortium for Energy and Environment (KRCEE) to conduct a public study on future use. A decision to ship wastes off-site factors into this study because it affects the amount of land available for other uses and could affect the speed of the final cleanup of the site.

DOE has successfully built and operated on-site waste disposal facilitiesat a number of sites, including these:
• Weldon Spring, MO, near St. Louis, now part of a recreation area
• Hanford, WA, which remains an active DOE facility
• Oak Ridge, TN, which remains an active DOE facility
• Fernald, OH, near Cincinnati, which is now part of a nature preserve
